Welcome to our November edition!
This month, we’re celebrating endings and new beginnings —

recognising the milestones and achievements that have brought us here, while welcoming the fresh starts, bold ideas, and hopeful moments that shape our journey. Whether it’s a new project, a new face, or a new way of seeing things, we’re reminded that every beginning carries the promise of growth and renewal.

NEW BEGINNINGS THROUGHOUT OUR MAHI:

As we celebrate endings and new beginnings, our senior students at Te Whare Taiohi (TWT), our education pathways programme, have been reflecting on their own journeys — the milestones they’re proud of and the fresh starts ahead.

Students spoke about the fun activities, Friday outings, friendships, and having a safe, welcoming space each day. Many highlighted bonding with youth workers and how supported they felt — with a few keeping it real and saying they simply “enjoyed leaving.” Their reflections — from finishing schoolwork to completing certifications, gaining confidence, and “getting my shit together” — show real growth and resilience. These achievements capture both the journey behind them and the opportunities ahead.

Most shared they wouldn’t change their experience, describing TWT as a blessing and “everything a kid wishes school would be like.” A couple threw in playful suggestions for TWT — like mandatory gym time or rewinding to 2024 to relive the year.

Looking ahead, our students are full of optimism for the coming year, with plans to return to school, complete their qualifications, get their driver’s licences, find work, and stay positive. Many credited TWT with helping them believe in themselves again. Their voices remind us what this season is all about: closing chapters with pride, and stepping into new ones with courage and hope.

BGI Social Gallery:

Over the past six months, we’ve welcomed two incredible new interns from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Their fresh energy and art expertise have really lifted our exhibitions and strengthened how we connect with our community. This year also brought the launch of Socialise, our youth-led project blending art, culture, and active play for young people aged 9–18. With support from Nuku Ora, Socialise has created spaces full of movement, creativity, and confidence. Their crew brings so much joy — preparing kai, running games, and welcoming guests at every opening.

In September, we opened Edge of Eternity by Matt Hunt — a stunning triptych merging history, scripture, and sci-fi. The response has been huge, with full-house viewings and spontaneous kōrero with the artist and curator. We welcome you to come experience this gorgeous piece and learn more about art.

Social, BGI’s art gallery is currently celebrating its 12th exhibition since opening 21 months ago.

Our Challenge for Change volunteers have now completed their mentor training, marking a huge milestone in their journey with us. For many, this is their first time stepping into a mentoring role and engaging with young people in this way — but their enthusiasm, commitment, and energy are already shining through. Mentoring officially begins early next year as we welcome our new cohort.

As the year comes to a close, we gathered with our volunteers to reflect on their experiences so far. Many shared feelings of excitement, anticipation, and purpose — seeing this moment as the start of a new chapter, not only for themselves but for the young people they’ll soon be walking alongside.
