Cooking on a Budget

Cooking on a Budget teaches families, young people, and university students how to cook their favourite feeds seasonally and cheaply. The aim is to enable our locals to care for themselves, their communities, and the environment – all while saving money!

Michael develops tasty recipes based on the food we receive from Kaibosh, making sure to avoid waste. Each class has a different theme and lesson but we always include a basic food and kitchen tool safety rundown. This covers knife sharpening, chopping techniques, and the best implements to use for creating interesting meals efficiently.

During classes, participants learn to make dishes using fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, preserved foods, and spices. The cooking is done collectively – we make mistakes, laugh, and learn together.

After the mahi, we sit down to share our meal, making sure there are enough leftovers for everyone to take home to their families and flatmates.

Cooking on a Budget is entirely free for young people (24 y/olds and under) and caregivers and children thanks to the Vavasour Charitable Trust and others! For 25+ y/olds we ask for a koha ($20+ recommended) to help support the community kitchen and the work we do. There’s no catch, so bring your friends and whānau along – all cooking abilities are welcome!
