Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi Courses

Wai Ora

Wai Ora is a Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi level 3 & 4 programme. It enables students to understand and apply the appropriate tikanga (customary practices) and mātauranga Māori (indigenous knowledge) to the care of their local waters.

Graduates are empowered to effectively protect and regenerate the mauri (life force) of their fresh and sea waters, for the benefit of whānau, iwi, hapū, and the marae. The goal is to become proficient kaitiaki (guardians) in order to support current and future generations to do the same.

We feel fortunate to host this free, place-based course, which blends modes of learning such as wānanga, self-directed online study, and noho.

During Wai Ora, participants are encouraged to connect and learn from each other, just as much as they learn from tangata whenua – the kaiako (teachers).

All meals are made in our Community Kitchen and eaten communally.

If you’re a local citizen (or residence class visa holder) over 17 years of age, this Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi course is for you!

Wai Ora Testimonial
"I really enjoyed the opportunity to better understand and relate to the wai, whenua, moana, flora and fauna around Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara. Ihaia (kaiako) is very approachable and knowledgeable. I'm really grateful for his mentorship and expertise, he made it very easy and interesting to engage with course material.

From Pāua diving to hiking, installing a biogas unit to knitting fyke nets, the practical elements, the conversations and friendships, are all taonga I gained from this course.

Overall, I really enjoyed both level 3 and 4 waiora courses. At the same time as I was studying these courses I was finishing my honors thesis researching cross-cultural, specifically Māori, perspectives on groundwater. The conversations and course material in both level 3 and 4 waiora have enriched my thesis and me personally and I would highly recommend it.”

Te Pou Hono Ki Taiao (on hold)

Te Pou Hono ki Taiao is a 40 credit, level 4 Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi programme, presented over 8 staggered weekends. It provides 18+ year old tauira (students) with a wide range of skills to plan, carry out, and effectively engage in community te taiao (environmental) initiatives.

The course covers Mana Atua (well-being and the power of the gods), Mana Whenua (the authority and significance of the land), Mana Tangata (interconnectedness and the power of the people), and Mana Rangatira (traditional medicine and how Māori connect to the bush).

Te Pou Hono ki Taiao has been designed as a free, marae-centered, place-based, wānanga style programme. Through BGI, it’s based at Troup House, with excursions to various significant sites planned to correspond with course content.

We love hosting this course and the passionate locals who get involved! Participants get to experience BGI’s manaakitanga in full force, with all meals catered by Head Chef Michael.
