A WORD FROM THE DIRECTOR

Tena Koutou Katoa,

Once again I am astounded by: our passionate staff/volunteers, our strong supportive Board, and the participation of thousands of young people in the planning, development and delivery of BGI's programmes.

We are stoked to have funders who provide far more than dollars. They provide feedback, encouragement and an appreciation of our work that not only sustains us, but changes us.  In addition there is a Spirit about the place here. This links us with those young people who founded BGI in 1883; reminding us of our past in the  present as we help shape the future.

Ross Davis,
Director of Youth and Community Projects

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

First I want to pay a special tribute to those who have gone before and to the people of BGI today.

The wonderful work of BGI continues from year to year. From 1883 to today the BGI as an organization has developed, been transformed and grown from strength to strength, but always with the vision, plans and activities to support and enhance the lives of the youth people it serves.

BGI continues to be a model for innovative youth work and is a key partner with agencies and communities in Wellington. BGI’s projects respond to the real needs of young people and are developed and run by young people for young people. Most importantly these projects positively change the lives of many young people and achieve many other encouraging results for young people and their families.

My thanks go to our BGI staff for all their enthusiasm, professionalism, abilities and hard work for another successful year. My thanks also goes to the Board for your dedication, stewardship and support. My thanks go to the many supporters of BGI, those who are funders and all the young people of BGI. Thank you and very best wishes to you all.

Financial Summary

It is my pleasure to present the 2007 financial summary of the Wellington Boys’ and Girls Institute Incorporated. The summary report and graphs are intended to illustrate the sectors from which the funds were sourced and to show how these funds were used. They are not a substitute for the audited financial statements which are available in a separate document.
The institute finished the year with a small deficit of $1,677 after inflation proofing our capital investment by the consumer price index (CPI) in accordance with the rules. The CPI for the year to 30 June 2007 was 2% compared with 4% in the prior year. Our funders continue to provide us with the financial support which is so important for the work we do and moving forward we will continue to rely on the existing generous funding partners as well as establish relationships with new funders.
Our financial statements do not reflect the enormous contribution made by an outstanding team of volunteers who help in all areas of our work. A number of projects are largely dependent on volunteer support, without which these projects would not be possible.
During the year Jenni Redding moved to Dunedin after more than four years as accountant. I became the part-time accountant in January 2007, assisted by Yourng Young. Since taking up the position it has been an absolute pleasure working with such a talented and dedicated team.
